The decision of the Indian Government to ban 118 Chinese apps including one of the most popular games in India, PUBG, created a lot of stir among the masses. Twitter was filled with mixed reactions from the people after The Ministry of Information ad Technology announced the ban on Thursday.
Some time back, the Government had banned several Chinese apps which included TikTok. On June 31st, this ban was imposed on 59 Chinese apps. TikTok was in this list of banned apps which was one of the most popular short-form video sharing platforms with millions of users in the Indian subcontinent. TikTok ban also created a lot of stir all over the country, and the original company also incurred a lot of loss pertaining to the prohibition.
Following this trend, another 47 apps were banned on July 28th, which were mostly the lite versions of the previously prohibited apps. The Government took this decision after receiving several complaints stating that these apps were breaching the privacy of the users. Some sources noted that the user’s private information was suspected of being transferred to the servers illegally located outside India. The apps have been removed from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store and are no longer available for download in the Android and iOS devices.
PUBG AND OTHER 117 CHINESE APPS BANNED
The Ministry of Information and technology banned more Chinese apps on Thursday, with PUBG being a significant app in the list. PUBG Mobile has a massive user’s base in India, and the consequence of this app ban is a significant loss to the parent company Tencent. PUBG lite, which is available on the Google Play Store, was also banned by the Government. Although, the desktop version of the app is still available in the country.
Tencent is yet to issue any comment on the matter. In an official Press Release issued by The Ministry of Information and Technology, it was mentioned that The Chinses apps had been banned under the section 69A of the Information Technology Act. It further stated that provisions under the Information Technology Rules 2009 and the anticipatory threats posed by these apps were the prime reasons that this action of banning 118 apps was taken. The activities were against the security, defence and integrity of the country. The apps are believed to have stolen user’s private data.
