How to get into an IIM?
The average IIM student spends most of their time preparing for CAT (Common Admission Test), which takes place in November every year. Organized by the IIMs, this exam is a gateway to 20 IIMs and over 100 B-schools across India. The pre-CAT preparation phase usually starts around April/May and lasts for about 6 months.
This is followed by GD-PI (Group Discussion-Personal Interview) rounds from February through March, where students are tested on a variety of skills including Communication and Analytical skills, General Awareness, etc.
Finally, the results are declared towards the end of March/April. With the formal admission process ending in May-June, the academic session starts in mid-June/July.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide that can help you choose the best B-schools in India for your MBA program
- Shortlist colleges based on CAT score and cut off
For most B-schools in India, the first step of shortlisting is based on your scores in the Common Admission Test (CAT). The higher your score, the more your chances of getting shortlisted are. For schools like IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore, this cut-off is 99 percentiles and above. Next, you should also check if your 10th and 12th standard scores are within the cut-off range.
- Research about the college
Once you have a list of colleges that fit your CAT score, you need to focus on other important aspects that will help you make a final choice. You will likely be spending a considerable amount of time at these colleges, so make sure it has everything that you need to further your career.
This is the most important part of your journey to get into a management institute. It is also one of the most important questions that you need to answer before you start your B-school application process. Your answers will help you decide on the schools that are on your target list and what parameters you should use to make a decision on which school is better than the others.
- Career goals
The important thing to do is decide what your career goals are, and then think about how going to business school will help achieve them. Ask yourself if an MBA degree is going to help you achieve your dreams and aspirations or not? You can either set up a business of your own, join a family business or take a leap towards entrepreneurship or leadership roles in an organization. Hence, it is very important to identify which path you want to pursue and what kind of skillset and knowledge would be required for that particular path.
Which course to do?
Though the best B-schools in India are located in metro cities, many business schools have also opened their campuses in smaller cities. Some of these are as good (if not better) than the ones that are located in metros.
While choosing a B-school, you should look for the curriculum, placement record, and the facilities offered by that college. It is very important to know whether the college aligns with your career goals or not.
One of the most important things to consider before taking admission in any B-school is – do you want to pursue an MBA full-time or part-time? A full-time MBA lasts for about two years and is generally a daunting task to complete along with a job. A part-time MBA takes longer than a full-time one but there’s no compromise on your work-life balance. However, it is best suited only if you have prior work experience of at least 2 years.
Before enrolling in an MBA program, you should also know whether you want to do an MBA with a specialization or a general one. For example, if you possess prior knowledge and experience of human resource management then opting for an HR specialization will be more lucrative for you than doing a general MBA course.
