Actress Deepika Padukone had visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in Delhi on January 7, 2020, to express her solidarity to the students who were beaten up two days before her visit. It is said that this was a mere publicity stunt for her new movie- ‘Chhapaak’, which has now been released. Several right-wing supporters had requested to boycott the release of this movie in their regions, stating that a person who supports the JNU students is an anti-national and should not make any profits from the public.
Many known personalities, celebrities and politicians have given a mixed a reaction to her visit- while some support her by saying that every person has the right to express their feelings and extend support to their choices and beliefs while others stated that the actress’s visit was nothing but a publicity stunt to promote her new movie.
Various right-wing groups and some BJP leaders called for a boycott of Deepika Padukone’s new film– ‘Chhapaak’ (based on true events from the life of an acid attack survivor), in response to her public show of sympathy with students at JNU campus, where many were injured in a horrifying beating and chaos carried out by masked goons on January 5 2020.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar later told India Today TV that the Modi government and the BJP did not support the boycott campaign.
Deepika Padukone spoke about the violence at JNU in a recent interview with Aaj Tak TV stating, “I am very angry at what is happening, but it is worse that no action is being taken”.
In a video released later, Hindu Raksha Dal’s chief Pinky Chaudhary took responsibility for the attack in JNU and stated, “JNU is a hotbed of anti-national activities, and we cannot tolerate this. We take full responsibility for the attack in JNU and would like to say that they were our workers.”
“The way these people have been behaving over the years, especially the people in JNU, it is against our religion. We can never tolerate such anti-national activities.”
