Discipline policies in education have become an increasingly complex topic. In the past disciplinary action was usually carried out by the teacher or by a surrogate in the form of detention. A policy should also be developed for handling disruptive behaviour of staff members in order to create a positive learning environment for both students and teachers alike.

Therefore, schools and administrations should be consistent in their policies and discipline in order to uphold high ethical standards. When an unethical action is not taken seriously, it teaches students that they do not have to follow the rules because little consequence will follow.
