The whole world was left astounded as the news of terrorist shootings in Vienna was aired. Gunmen had opened relentless fire at 6 locations in Vienna terrorizing the city and killing at least two people. According to the Mayor of Vienna, Micheal Ludwig, 15 people have been hospitalized out of which 7 are seriously injured. Sebastian Kurz, the Chancellor of Austria, said the attack to a “repulsive terror attack” highly condemning the act.
One of the attackers were tracked and shot down by the police search patrols who are in search of at least one more gunman. The attack took place at 6 different locations by several assailants who were armed with rifles. The incident took place on Monday night, after 8:00 pm.
The shooting took place several hours before the commencement of another COVID-19 lockdown. A large number of people were outside in bars, restaurants, etc to enjoy before entering into another quarantine.
Initially, the police had informed that one passer-by had died in the shooting process but later Mayor Ludwig announced the death of the second individual who has succumbed to her injuries. Police also informed that several officers were also hurt in the unfortunate event.
The number of assailants involved in the shooting was not clear and according to the official sources, one suspect is still on the run. Austrian leader Kurz informed that the police force is involved in the anti-terror operation and the army would take over the security operations in the major buildings around Vienna.
People of Vienna were urged to remain inside their homes and abscond from stepping outside to the public places. Schools were also ordered to remain shut on Tuesday.
The incident took place in the lively center of Vienna where people were seemingly enjoying their last day outside before the implementation of another COVID-19 lockdown. Many witnesses described the incident to be unbelievable. According to a witness present in a Bar, the shooting initially felt like a film shoot and then policemen entered the building asking the people to remain inside. They also informed that there is the possibility of a person dying in the street. The witness described it as a cowardly and repulsive act.
The news of terror shootings has shocked everyone. The security provisions have been more prominent. France, which had a similar experience a few weeks back has greatly sympathized with Vienna saying that it is a peaceful city and did not deserve such mishap.
